Why Teenage Female Elephants Are Taking over Herds
Many elephant matriarchs are killed early by poachers for their long tusks, forcing adolescent female elephants to step in and take their roles. Matriarchs, usually the oldest female in the family, are older than other elephants in the herd. Males leave their families at puberty, while female elephants stay on permanently and raise the calves.
