Lemur Extinction Linked to Orphaning of Trees
A Yale study has found trees within Madagascar’s forest ecosystem have been “orphaned” by the extinction of the giant lemurs that once dispersed their seeds about 500 to 1,700 years ago. The seeds of fleshy fruits are normally distributed by animals. This sheds light on the delicate balance of needs within Madagascar’s forests, and lends more immediacy to lemur-conservation concerns.
