In a study that has global implications for irrigation and hydro-electricity schemes, researchers say taking too much water from rivers reduces fish survival as they do not get food in the form of drifting invertebrates. Concentration of invertebrates decreases as stream flows decline, because the river cannot pick them up from the river bed.
