Falling lease rentals on farmland, one of the best indicators of agricultural downturn, is manifesting itself in Punjab, where farmers are returning to cultivating paddy, after growing cash crops like basmati and cotton while realisations were good. In the basmati growing Majha region, land rentals have come down by almost 40 percent in 2 years.
