Peruvian potato farmer Maxima Acuna de Chaupe has halted U.S. mining giant Newmont Mining Corporation’s US$4.8 billion plans. Acuna's 60-acre plot is where the company's local joint-venture, Yanacocha, wanted a Conga copper and gold mine. She refused to sell her land to the mining company, her resistance receiving international campaign support.
