Greenpeace found that 417 of 825 coal blocks in India fall within forest areas categorized as "inviolate" under hydrological parameters. This means, the coal blocks are encroaching the river banks. Mining in forests beyond 250 metres of the river banks can cause water pollution, erosion and worsening water scarcity.
