Why are Women Banned From Mount Athos?
The Mount Athos, a 335 sq km (130 sq mile) peninsula of monasteries in Greece, has barred women of all species within 500m of the coast since 1,000 years. Reasons could be celibacy as also a fable connected to Virgin Mary, who alone represents her sex on Mount Athos. This means that even dairy products and eggs have to be brought in from outside.
