Among foreign tourists, the most popular destination in the country’s Amazon region is the 274,000 hectare Tambopata National Reserve, with its rich biodiversity including 169 mammal species, yet it currently stands invaded by gold-miners. Gold-mining is causing deforestation, mercury pollution, assassinations, and human trafficking there.
